Oil Surfaces

The most popular and traditional surface for use with oil colour paints is canvas. At Eckersley's you will find a variety of canvas options, from primed stretched canvas to raw unprimed canvas or canvas panels. Stretched canvases are ready to go, although some artists like to refine their surface further with additional gesso layers. Once completely dry, stretched canvases can be framed easily with the Jasart Floater Frames, which give the illusion that the artwork is floating within the frame.

Wooden boards and panels should be primed with gesso before use and are a different experience for the artist, allowing a heavier hand when applying paint layers. Oil painting paper pads are an affordable solution for those starting out or sketching with oil sticks or pastels.
