Oil Paint

When painting with oils, the traditional technique is to sketch the subject first with charcoal or thinned paint. The paint is then applied after being mixed with a drying oil such as linseed, poppy seed, walnut or safflower oil, depending on how fast or slow you want it to dry. The artist might use several different oils in the painting, depending on the effect required. In recent years, water soluble oil paints have become available which can be thinned with water rather than paint thinner and allow for much faster drying times (days instead of weeks).
